Free Trial

Never paddled before? Try Dragon Boating with a free trial. This free trial allows you to come to two (2) trial sessions to try out the sport. After your two free sessions, you'll need purchase a Level 1 membership to continue paddling with our club.

NOTE: Nonmembers Attending Events Policy

Prospective members are welcome to attend up to two complimentary events before joining the Greater Chicago Dragon Boat Club. The trial period events include all club activities, such as dragon boat paddling sessions and fitness events (e.g. Doghouse and Pool Paddling). Members will get precedence over guests for events. The guest’s payment for events, including Doghouse, will be the responsibility of the member who is hosting the guest. Fireworks paddles are reserved for members only. Guests must be at least 18 years old and are required to sign all applicable waivers. Doghouse events are open to members and guests of a specific member, not to other applicants. Members who invite a guest for a paid event must notify Treasurer@chicagodragonboat.com and have them sign up in Gym Master for a free trial.

Free Trial - Experienced

If you've paddled before with another team but not with our club, this free trial allows you two (2) free paddling sessions with GCDBC. After your two free sessions, you'll need to purchase a membership to continue paddling with our club.

Level 1 - 2026

Level 1 is a beginner paddling level. If you are a new paddler or someone with limited Dragon boating experience, Level 1 membership gives you access to all of our Level 1 practice sessions, clinics, off season training, and social events.

What Level 1 Paddlers Can Expect:
● Focus on learning fundamentals and terminology
● Learning to apply coaching feedback consistently
● Introduction to OC-2 (outrigger canoe) during the May Training Camp
● Experience first 2-minute time trial during the season

PLEASE NOTE: If you are already an experienced paddler, you may be eligible for Level 2 or 3, depending on your experience. If you haven't paddled with GCDBC before, please email coaches@chicagodragonboat.com to discuss with our team's coaches on a level recommendation before you sign up.

Level 2 - 2026

Level 2 is an intermediate paddling level. Levels are determined by GCDBC Coaches. You should sign up for the level you were at previously, unless explicitly discussed with a GCDBC Coach. If you're not sure, please reach out to coaches@chicagodragonboat.com.

What Level 2 Paddlers Can Expect:
● Progression from Level One
● Longer, more physically demanding practices
● Continued development of OC skills and individual boat contribution
● Suitable for recreational paddlers
● Progression toward competitive levels

Level 3 - 2026

Level 3 is an advanced paddling level. Levels are determined by GCDBC Coaches. You should sign up for the level you were at previously, unless explicitly discussed with a GCDBC Coach. If you're not sure, please reach out to coaches@chicagodragonboat.com.

What Level 3 Paddlers Can Expect:
● Regular participation in team training activities (practices, races, training camps, off-season fitness classes)
● Completion of multiple OC distances over 2 minutes during the season (single steers)
● Improvement in physical fitness and overall strength

BCP - Breast Cancer Paddlers

BCP is a team within GCDBC specifically designated for members who have battled or are battling with breast cancer. This club is meant to foster a supportive community and environment for those individuals while also providing a low-impact and full-body workout that builds your strength and endurance. BCP membership gives you access to practices, races, off-season fitness classes, social events, and more.
